Speaker Biography

Dr. Nalbantoglu’s research interests focus on gene expression and gene transfer to the nervous system. Her laboratory studies normal function of neural cells as well as the pathologic processes underlying neurological diseases and brain tumors. Dr. Nalbantoglu obtained her undergraduate and graduate education in the Department of Biochemistry at McGill University. Following post-doctoral training at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) in London, England, she joined the Montreal Neurological Institute where her work has been supported by the National Cancer Institute of Canada, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Cancer Research Society, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (USA).


Our laboratory is interested in understanding how cell adhesion molecules transmit extracellular cues into intracellular signals. We have shown that the cell adhesion molecule CAR inhibits migration and invasion of brain tumor cells. We are characterizing the domains of CAR that regulate cell migration. The use of live cell imaging with the BioFlux system has allowed us to quantitate cell migration in a straight-forward, reproducible manner
